Twitter users may be older than you think

I’ve asked Twitter friends and attendees at past Tweetups whether they thought Twitter was more of a Generation X service while Facebook was more of a Generation Y service. I’ve been told that’s not the case. Yet these latest statistics suggest that, in fact, working Gen Xers are a big piece of the Twitter puzzle. And new users of Twitter in the last few months have been mostly Gen X or older.

It is the 25-54 year old crowd that is actually driving the [Twitter] trend. More specifically, 45-54 year olds are 36% more likely than average to visit Twitter, making them the highest indexing age group, followed by 25-34 year olds, who are 30% more likely.

Not that this “means” anything, of course. But I do find it fascinating.

My own theory is that Gen X folks don’t have the time or patience for the extra “load” Facebook places on users (advertising, games, surveys, profile configurations, instant messaging, other applications). But I certainly haven’t done any studies!

What do you think?
