Boxing Day Sledding Tweetup

It’s a proven fact that sledding is good for one’s health. It provides ample opportunity to fill one’s lungs with fresh and crisp air and one’s blood with quick jolts of adrenaline. It is also known as the best way to get over all of the extra calories that come with the holidays. This Boxing Day, let’s sled down Powerline Pass and Gasline Pass.

Location

We will meet at the end of Sultana Drive, marked on the map as a P, at 12:00pm on December 26. By 12:15 we will cram as many people and sleds into as few 4×4 or AWD vehicles as possible and drive to the Glen Alps Parking Lot at the base of Flattop. After a short walk we will be ready for a great 2-mile sledding extravaganza!

What to Bring

  • Warm clothes
  • Snow gear: pants, boots, gloves, scarf, hat
  • A sled or two, something fast and fun
  • Thermos of hot cocoa for the bottom of the hill
  • This is a family-friendly tweetup, so bring as many friends and family as you can

Caveats

If the weather turns terrible the sledding tweetup will be canceled; a determination on the weather will be made closer to Boxing Day. We will also need a number of 4×4 or AWD vehicles capable of making the drive up to the Glen Alps parking lot and drivers willing to shuttle others.

Karaoke Tweet-up!

The holidays are upon us. For weeks we have been shopping, making plans with loved ones, decorating our homes, and baking. While we have been frosting cookies and sending off cards, wrapping packages and singing carols, many of us have forgotten to reflect upon the most important activities of this sacred season.

Go to your crawl space, get your aluminum pole and join @Mayor_of_Twtr and @Clusterfarce this Friday, December 18 from 8:30 until we’re done at The Blue Fox for some karaoke in preparation for December 23 — also known as FESTIVUS.

You can speak frankly about each other’s karaoke performance to practice for:

THE AIRING OF GRIEVANCES

THE FEATS OF STRENGTH

Join us Friday, December 18 from 8:30 until we’re done at The Blue Fox for what promises to be an interesting evening! Just remember, the celebration isn’t over until the Head of Household is wrestled to the floor and pinned!

Thanks to @jennywalks, Loren Dixon and @KNBA for hosting a fun little tweetup at Anchorage’s only music-based public radio station. Tune in to FM 90.3 to hear some of your fellow tweeters on the air soon!

Photos

Photos from the Tweetup are posted to Flickr. You can also review tons of photos in the Alaska Tweets photo pool!

@akcook reports that Marty McFly has been waking him up multiple times during the night this week, and I know Olive has been doing the same to @Valette. Convinced that they are restless from going an ENTIRE WEEK without seeing each other, we will be walking with the dogs this weekend in hopes of getting it out of their system.

Meet @Valette, @akcook , @jamielang and other scruffy creatures (with and without Twitter accounts) at the end of Klutina Drive this Sunday, December 6 at 2:00pm. See the map below for directions.

Rock and Roll!

Photo: @SethBoyer does his best Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Man, he’s good.

We had a great little group make it out post-Thanksgiving and pre-work-week tonight and everyone seemed to enjoy Pirate Radio, an entertaining little romp through a raucous period of radio and rock-and-roll history. Then a smaller group got together afterwards at the Bear Tooth Grill for eats and good conversation.

OUR PIRATES (starred names also went to the Bear Tooth Grill):

Sounds like everyone had a great time seeing The Men Who Stare at Goats tonight, thanks to help from @FX_DaleTran of Kaladi Brothers fame and all the fun tweeps who came out to Century 16 in Anchorage. I can’t speak for everyone, but I thought the movie was hilarious.

Both @BigDaveGrizzly and @ClusterFarce showed up to enjoy their free tickets — courtesy of @KaladiBrothers — and we all got to sit together in a bunch in the theater. No popcorn fights broke out. Well, not much of one.

kaladi2And thanks yet again to @KaladiBrothers for offering free drink coupons to everyone attending, which we passed out before the show (sadly, no Kaladi at the movie theater!).

OUR JEDI WARRIORS:

Want to host your own movie tweetup? Just send us your idea, the details of where and when, and we can post it here to AlaskaTweets.com!

staring at the red goat

The fall movie season is upon us, so let’s get together to see a movie that looks as crazy as the Alaska Twitter community itself: The Men Who Stare at Goats.

We hope to see you there! And please… leave the goats at home.

UPDATE: Added @_e_bomb to the list. (Let us know if you attended a Tweetup in October and we missed you on the list.)

Tweetup still growing

You know what Follow Friday is, right? Well, we haven’t done that here at Alaska Tweets so far, but that’s changing today (a Friday, no less!).

Today we’re announcing Follow Friday: Tweetup Edition. Our Follow Friday tweets today plus this post and a brand new Twitter List are honoring those Alaska Tweeters known to have attended at least one Tweetup during the month of October 2009 (as documented here at alaskatweets.com).

These are folks that are not only fun to follow online, they’re also fun to meet in person. If you haven’t been to a Tweetup yet, be sure to make it out for the next one. We love meeting new Twitter friends!

Here’s the full list, or check out twitter.com/alaskatweets/tweetupattendees
